Here’s a simple guide to following the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens:
The 16 teams are drawn into four pool groups of four. They play each other once. The top two teams in each pool will progress to the Main Cup competition and the chance to win a gold medal, while lower ranked teams will contest a new Challenge Trophy competition.
The Cup is the main trophy the teams are competing for, and the quarter-final winners go on to the semi-finals, and the winners of those two matches meet in the final. The losing semi-finalists play off for 3rd/4th place.
The Plate is what losing quarter-finalists then play-off for – two semi-finals, then the final. The winners of the Plate take 5th place, the runners-up 6th. The losing semi-finalists play-off for 7th/8th place.
The teams that finish third and fourth in the pools go into the Bowl and Shield competition. The eight teams meet in a quarter-final.
The Bowl: The winning quarter-final teams from this section then meet in the Bowl semi-final, and then the final. According to how they fare, the teams will then be placed from 9th to 12th.
The Shield: The losing quarter-finalists play each other in the Shield semi-final, and then the final. Again, depending on results, teams are then placed 13th to 16th.
The 12 teams are placed in three pools of 4 and play in a round robin. The top eight teams play off in the Cup Competition with the chance to win a gold medal. Teams ranked 9-12 play off for the Challenge Trophy.
The Cup: The winners of the quarter-finals go forward to the semi-finals. The winners play off in the Cup final, and the losers play off for 3rd and 4th place.
The Plate: The losers in the Cup quarter-finals then play in the Plate semi-finals. The winners meet in the Plate final, which decides who finishes 5th and 6th.
The losers of those semi-final matches then play-off for 7th and 8th.
The Bowl: The teams ranked 9-12 play in the bowl semi-finals. The winners then meet in the Bowl final, which also decides who finishes 9th/10th. The semi-final losers play-off for 11th/12th place.
